Future of eCommerce and retail in India - The Perfect Storm

The online retail environment in India is eerily quiet. The overall online pie is still very small. Broadly speaking, Indian consumers arent shopping online. The distributors or local vendors still look at the online channel as a drop in the bucket. New online retailers are slowly emerging however Indian ecommerce just cant seem to hit its stride. What does this all mean? Is online retailing not for the Indian market? Are the cultural preferences of Indian customers so unique that ecommerce will never achieve a mainstream status? Although the current state paints a very somber image for eCommerce in India, it reminds me of the time when we went on a vacation to Florida, only to find out that the area was about to be hit by a category 3 hurricane. Standing in balcony of the hotel room, I could feel an uneasy quiet. Wind was calm however I could feel something big was about to happen. Two years later, I find myself standing on the verge of another perfect storm a storm that will change the face of online shopping in India.

It is not a mystery anymore that the retail industry is going through a significant organization in India. Some would argue that this opens up more exciting options for consumers to shop in a physical store, which would further impact the adoption of online shopping in a negative way. Fair argument, however, I would like to share some specific reasons why I strongly believe that a reverse phenomenon is inevitable organization in physical retail will fuel an explosive growth of online ecommerce in India.

Why has eCommerce adoption been slow in India?

Before we look at the factors that will drive an explosive growth in eCommerce, it is important to look at why eCommerce hasnt taken off so far in India. Although there have been several debates on this topic, to me the most basic reason is that most Indian consumers still dont see enough value proposition in shopping online. They cant be blamed because over the past few years, they have heard a lot of horror stories about not receiving the right products, not receiving products in time, notwithstanding the issues related to cumbersome returns and cancellation processes when shopping online. On the other hand, we cant fully blame the online retailers because they have to rely on third party vendors, logistics partners who still havent achieved enough scale and the level of technology automation to consistently meet the desired service levels. These issues really point to the lack of a mature eco system across the eCommerce value chain. The organization in retail will give a significant boost to this eco system, which will help build trust with consumers so that they can feel comfortable in shopping online.

Organization in retail will catalyze eCommerce eco-system

First and foremost, as the retail industry gets organized in India, the overall supply chain infrastructure will see a significant improvement. This will have a direct and positive impact on the online channel. Today, the online supply chain infrastructure is virtually non-existent. Distributors use adhoc means to replenish inventories and fulfill customer orders. This leads to significant out of stock situations, which impacts the overall online customer experience. Having a solid supply chain infrastructure in place, distributors will be able to fulfill online orders in a predictable way.

Second, organized retailers will push for standardization across manufacturers and fulfillment partners. If we look at categories such as apparel, one of the biggest reasons consumers dont like to shop online is that they dont know what they are getting in terms of size, quality and fit. However, as there is standardization in quality as well as the attributes, consumers will feel more confident in purchasing the products online, without needing to touch and feel the physical product.

Another factor that will play a significant role in building this eco system is technology automation across the value chain. For nationwide retailers to maintain a competitive cost structure, they will push the manufacturers as well as suppliers to offer sophisticated technology integration so that they can better manage the flow of merchandise across the value chain. Online retailers will directly benefit from this sophistication in technology because they will be able to fulfill customers orders in a predictable fashion.

Lastly, national retailers will need to pool large amount of inventory in their distribution centers to service their stores across India. Holding inventory comes with an inevitable risk of over-forecasting. In these excess inventory conditions, retailers will need outlets for clearing the merchandise to free up the capital, and to flow fresh season merchandise into the stores. Web is a great channel for the clearance strategy, and retailers will be able to offer deep discounts online to clear up the inventory before they get ready for the next buying season. In US, various online retailers such as Overstock.com are built around the business model of buying overstock merchandise from retailers across US, and offering deep clearance pricing to customers.

Looking beyond Supply Chain & Fulfillment

The factors discussed above will help improve the adoption of eCommerce by making the online channel much more reliable. However, the role of online channel doesnt end here. With organization in retail, new online business models will emerge that will help facilitate online as well as offline sales. In Sears, we used to call these Web Influenced Sales. Over 70% of retail sales across high consideration categories in the United States are influenced by some kind of research on the internet. There are online businesses that provide comparison shopping services (e.g. Shopping.com), discussions on hot deals (e.g. Fatwallet.com), product reviews (e.g. CNET.com), Local store promotions (ShopLocal.com) etc. All these services are part of the online eco-system, that provide information at consumers fingertips so that they dont have to scour through 100s of printed store ads or rely on word of mouth to determine where can they purchase that new XBOX 360 console. As retail organizes in India, we will see the evolution of similar online aggregation and retail focused services that will not only help customers make informed purchase decisions, but will also put the online channel in the center stage of online and offline retail.

Desktop or Laptop? Choose the Right Computer For You!

When considering the purchase of a new computer, many people find themselves asking - should I buy a desktop or laptop computer? I buy over one hundred computers a year for my clients, and am often asked this same question. In this article I will share with you the same advice I give my clients.

Cost Considerations

Laptops are generally speaking, more expensive than desktops. A similarly equipped laptop going to cost at least 25% more initially, but the lifetime of the average laptop is generally shorter than than the lifetime of the average desktop. Face it - laptops are fragile, and the inevitible bumps and bruises eventually take their toll. The bottom line is, the portability of a laptop comes at a premium price.

Some people create a "home space" for their laptops, with include such accessories and peripherals as an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, scanner, and/or printer. If you can afford it, this scenario gives you the best of both worlds.

Speed

Laptops, generally speaking, are slower than desktops. There are many factors that go into the speed of a computer, and obviously some laptops are faster than some desktops. However, generally speaking:

-- Laptops are designed to run on battery power. Their components begin to power down after brief periods of non-use, and it takes time for them to come back to life.

-- All but the high end laptop hard drives are 5400rpm, whereas entry level desktop hard drives are 7200rpm. More RPMS means more speed, but also requires more power.

-- Laptop processors use much less energy...and therefore can't perform as many operations in the same amount of time as a desktop processor.

Do you NEED Portability?

If you don't need the portability, get a desktop. I have clients who paid big money for a high dollar laptop, docking station, separate keyboard, mouse, and monitor...only to have it sit on their desk. Maybe portability to you means you like to sit on the couch at night and surf the web - fine. (I do that myself!) But if your computer is not going to move, save the money and get a faster computer - buy a desktop.

Ergonomics

Due to the very nature of laptops, they do not typically provide as good of ergonomics as desktop machines. If you spend a lot of time on your computer, and plan to buy a laptop, you may need to create a space with good ergonomics to work. There are many resources on the web to help you do this - just Google ergonomics.

Theft

Another consideration is the possibility of theft. Laptops are at the top of the list for petty thieves, and you must guard them carefully when you are out and about. There are theft recovery systems such as Lojack available to help you recover your computer if stolen, for a price.

musicArtist Marketing 101 Or "How To Create While Not Starving"

Most musicArtist are very similar in character to Painters or Sculptors or Craftsmen. What I mean is that you are what your description implies and that is you are an Artist and while that is what sets you apart from some guys being in an Air Band it also is what the Labels have always counted on. Historically Labels have always known that you the musicArtist have been focused on your music. You did not have time to think about the details of getting gigs or producing a CD or even creating your words and music(some of you). Forget about doing Marketing or PR. Not only did you not have time for that but it got to the point that any of those areas you disdained so you hired Managers to handle all of that for you. All you wanted to do was your music.

The Labels came on as being able to handle all of that for you and in some cases they did it well, but as time moved on the Managers, Agents, Labels and others have created an industry that literally feeds off of the musicArtist. Now the CD sales have declined 17% in just the this last QUARTER. If there is a Label that will sign you they are now no longer giving the massive advances as before and in fact now because they are loosing money like water thru a sieve , they actually have the audacity to demand a piece your touring revenues. So what can you do?

The answer is quite simple, the same paradigm shift that has caused the musicindustry to turn upside down (technology) and for artist to make less money, is the same thing that will increase your income. Here it is:

Do NOT think of BRANDING yourself as denigrating your music; it is the opposite, when you create yourself as a BRAND you do two things. The first is that everywhere your musicis played it is identified with you and the second is. ..guess whatyou create a means of protecting yourself and your musicwith trademark protection (which cost you all of $250). Look at the Beatles the Grateful Dead and yes even Prince. So think BRANDBRAND...BRAND...because brother if you dont then I guarantee someone (like a Label) will and then you are screwed when you become huge...so do it now.

Create a mindset that the Band/Yourself is a Entrepreneurial Company. What does this mean? Think like this, Ken Abdo chair of the Entertainment Law Initiative at the Grammy Foundation, was quoted at a recent conference telling about A band called The String Cheese Incident had formed a vertically integrated company to handle management, recording, intellectual property, legal counsel, and all other aspects of the business that is the band. These guys took it into their own hands to control their future. No longer can you think of being a musicArtist or a Band as just a way to express yourself. You MUST think about it as does any entrepreneur starting something new and cool. Otherwise you will be screwed down the line.

Use Technology; do not let Technology use you: Right now CD sales are not only in the toilet but they are going threw the sewer system and that will not stop, for every digital download there are at least 10 copies ripped. But the thing is that the musicis being listened to by someone who is downloading it somewhere, so that means opportunity. How? Well for starters create your own damn website. I cannot believe how many musicians use MySpace to promote them selves and do not have a website to direct the fans to. So guess what? MySpace makes all the freaking money off the ad space AND they capture YOUR fans.

When you do make your websiteadd in ecommerce ...add in your own cool stuff to selladd in ADVERTISING abilitiesadd in blogs...chatforumsbackstage videosvideos of you practicing.videos of you picking your nose, ANYTHING to make them want to go to your site from the MySpace page you set up. Make it so they feel special. When a song is downloaded make a 10 second message to your fans at the end of the song that say hey putzcome to my site www.blahblahblah.com and see what other feenominal sh*t I have for you. Now you think this is cheesy or takes away from your song? GUESS WHAT? STEALING YOUR SONG TAKES AWAY FROM YOU!

Kirk Franklin Rebirth Of Kirk Franklin Contemporary Gospel musicCD Review

Kirk Franklin, the richly talented Contemporary Gospel artist has released him latest CD titled Rebirth Of Kirk Franklin and Wow! Its really a good one.

This one literally grabs your attention right from the beginning with Hosanna and wont let go until the very last note of the very last song When I Get There, which is another great track by the way.

Kirk Franklin is one of those musicians that has the ability to just win you over with him talent. The kind of artist its really a treat to be able to listen to.

Listen to Rebirth Of Kirk Franklin and I believe youll find there's not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and Kirk Franklin is clearly in top form. So much so that if you're even mildly into Contemporary Gospel musicyou'll enjoy this CD.

While the entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 - Hosanna, track 5 - The Blood Song, and track 12 - The Transition.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 14 - When I Get There. Outstanding!
